Is Prebid Mobile worth the effort for app publishers? In our latest Camp.Fire session, Rob handed the floor to Jared Siegal, Founder and CEO of Aditude, who has spent two and a half years building out Prebid Mobile for publishers.

Joined by several app-first publishers, as a group we discussed where Prebid Mobile performs best and how to set up a competitive app stack. We also explored why identity and consent are so tricky in-app, and whether your app has the scale to justify the integration.

Getting the most from Prebid Mobile

Jared was clear that Prebid Mobile works, even if the documentation and community support still lag behind the web. Its sweet spot is standard banners and interstitials, where Aditude sees Prebid winning upwards of 70% of the time against Google AdX and Amazon. Interstitials regularly achieve $8-10 CPMs with close to 100% fill. Rewarded and other performance-heavy formats are a different story (and remain the territory of specialists like Unity). On the demand side, the usual SSPs show up, but platforms such as InMobi and AppNexus tend to stand out as strong performers in-app.

Jared’s top troubleshooting tip is that If bid rates look low, you need to check how the Prebid Mobile SDK and the Google Mobile Ads SDK communicate. Order of operations is where most setups break down, with bids often arriving after the ad request has already fired. And because one wrong bidder parameter (even a string instead of an integer) can break the entire server-side auction, it’s worth checking your server logs for erroring bidders.

WeatherBug, which is 94% app, shared how it runs Prebid Server (with 20 bidders), Amazon TAM, Nimbus and Google open bidding side by side. Letting all demand compete equally through price priority line items in GAM keeps things fair, and it also allows direct deals to pace properly. Jared added that Nimbus can pass bids into GAM as key values, so it doesn’t have to be your final mediator.

Identity, consent and enrichment

Identity signals are far more sparse in-app than on the web. On iOS, typically 70-90% of users opt out of tracking, and conflicts between device-level settings and CMP consent add further complexity. Jared’s advice is to avoid stripping everything out. Truncating the IP address rather than deleting it keeps enough signal for bidders, whereas blank fields can push iOS bid rates down to around 1%. He closed by stressing the value of geo enrichment on both iOS and Android.

Does your app have the scale?

Scale matters far more in-app than on the web. Smaller apps are easily dwarfed by high-volume gaming apps, and for some portfolios AdMob simply outperforms everything else. Larger publishers can protect speed with lower timeouts, longer TTLs (time to live) and prefetching, particularly for interstitials.

From Prebid Mobile’s strengths and smart stack setups to identity, consent and scale, this session was full of practical guidance for any publisher weighing up their in-app monetization. Watch the full video above to hear the complete discussion.
