Pub.Call: AI automation show + tell with Matthew Rance (April 9, 2026)
BY LIZ MOOREHEAD, BEELER.TECH
AI automation as a conversation starter is much more appealing when you start talking about practical workflow applications. That’s why this session focused on what it actually takes to build AI into publishing systems in a way that’s controlled, repeatable, and tied to a clear business need. The core point was simple: if the strategy underneath the automation is fuzzy, the workflow will be too.

Matthew Rance, Head of Commercial Data Analytics at Immediate Media, walked through how he built an automated daily AI newsletter. The demo showed how the system pulls in content, transforms the data, uses AI to summarize and score relevance, stores the results, and feeds an editorial dashboard where a human still makes the final call. The ultimate goal was to use automation to get the right material in front of an editor faster, with more structure and less manual sorting.
AI can be useful in surfacing patterns, ranking information, speeding up repetitive steps, and supporting decision-making. But the people building and using them still need to understand how the system works: where the data comes from, how it moves, what gets logged, where the risks are, and where human judgment belongs.
